What would I wear to the 2025 Met Gala?

This year's Met Gala 2025 has come and gone. It carried the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” I will say it has left its mark on me, as  I have always been a lover of fashion and clothing. I love the multitudes  of ways in  which culture and history are carried on through the very fabric we choose to wear or leave behind. This is why we can look at a photo and tell the time period and the culture of the people smiling back at us frozen in time.

I wanted to throw my own hat into the ring. You could say I was inspired. What would I wear if invited to be Superfine? Since the theme is about tailoring, I looked to the first memories I have of any tailored garment.

Sunday mornings getting ready for church. Sitting in my  oversized t-shirt eating breakfast while my sister fixed my hair and my grandma was putting on her suit. As a Deacon in the church, she wore an all white skirt suit with matching hat, kitten heels, and white stockings. I remember the scent of a hot comb and jelly on toast as my grandma walked back into the living room dressed to the nines.

With those thoughts in mind, I started styling.

It starts with the oversized Sunday hat with an oversized bow. Then we need the suit, which is a crisp white paired  with a soft blouse that sports the same motif as on the hat. Add the drama with a satin belt that has matching bow motifs trailing behind to make a grand train. Thus the silhouette of the suit is preserved but we have the drama fashion demands. Finished with fun accents of feathers and pearls.

The theme Superfine is honoring my culture and our history of tailoring excellence.  I could not think of anything more fitting than wearing a suit similar to what my grandmother would wear.
